Asia Pacific IAFEI CFO Summit 2008
Almost 200 chief finance officers representing 19 countries converged at the
Grand Hotel in Taipei for the Asia Pacific IAFEI CFO Summit held last
September 5, 2008.
The Financial Executives Institute (FEI) Chinese Taiwan, headed by Mr. Peter
Hsu and David Chou successfully hosted the event along with the
International Association of Financial Executives Institutes (IAFEI). FEI
Chinese Taiwan impressively conducted the Asian conference even as they were
given barely less than a year to organize it.
The affair kicked-off with a Welcome Dinner hosted by the Taipei City
Government at the elegant Grand Hyatt Hotel, introducing the delegates to
the warmth of Taiwanese hospitality that was to prevail throughout the
conference. Such hospitality extended to the day after the Conference when
delegates were treated to a City Tour of Taipei through the courtesy of the
FEI Chinese Taiwan.
The Speakers and Panelists who graced the Conference are prominent finance
officers in Taiwan and other parts of the globe, some of whom are IAFEI key
officers. The topics discussed in the Summit covered a broad range of
interesting current topics, which included the following:
The Changing Role of the CFO in a Globalized Business Environment presented
by Dr. Conchita Manabat, former Chair of IAFEI and member of IAFEI Advisory
Council. She touched on the evolving role of CFOs from one of being
preoccupied mainly with accounting and auditing tasks to one of a visionary
taking on more leadership role.
The Strategic Importance of Investor Relations for Corporations to Attract
Investors Worldwide presented by Dr. Elizabeth Sun, Head, Investor Relations
Division, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. She focused on the
various means to attract and sustain interest of desired foreign investors,
based on her experience in the highly competitive Taiwanese semiconductor
industry.
Asian Capital Market ¡V Current Situation and Outlook; Asian Capital Market
¡V Current Situation and Outlook presented by Mr. C. Y. Huang, Vice
President of Polaris Financial Group, He elaborated the capital markets in
various Asian markets, including Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai, Taiwan, and
their respective challenges and opportunities.
The other perspective is from a European, Mr. Helmut Schnabel, IAFEI
Chairman and Managing Owner of Asecuris Asset Management Advisory GmbH. Mr.
Schnabel gave very thorough background on the concept of securitization of
assets and what brought about the gigantic financial crisis in the US ¡V
from poor loan origination to inaccurate ratings of securities to lapses in
supervision.
In the afternoon there were two panel discussions. One was on Corporate
Governance and Social Responsibility in Asia, where Area Presidents for
Europe Marc Ugolini served as a panelist. The other is on Cross-Border M&A
and PE Investment in Asia .
IAFEI Area President for Asia Mr. Victor Lim briefly discussed both the
common and distinct activities of IAFEI Asian Institutes. IAFEI Area
President for Europe Marc Ugolini made an introduction on and extended
invitation for the upcoming 39th IAFEI World Congress in Paris, December
14-17, 2008.
